REVIEW: Randy Shilts

by J. Robinson

Randy Shilts' new book, And the Band Played On: Politics, People, and the AIDS Epidemic, is a chronicle of the AIDS issue. Shilts, a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, has spent five years reporting on AIDS. He is an openly gay reporter, whose first book, The Mayor of Castro Street: The Life and Times of Harvey Milk, brought him critical acclaim.

Reviews of his new book have been good but controversial. Publishers Weekly stated that it is "...A landmark work. Its importance cannot overstated." Producers are already

bidding for the book's film rights. The work contains such controversial subjects as the "Patient Zero" which follows the investigation of a French Canadian airline flight attendant who may have introduced AIDS virus to this country.

Shilts also spotlights community in a realistic, but always complimentary fashion, vealing the indulgent life styles many that promoted the spread of AIDS. And the Band Played On also refers to Ronald Reagan as the president who "would be remembered in

history books for one thing beyond all else: he was the man who had let AIDS rage through America, the leader of the government that when challenged to action had placed politics above the health of the American people."

Shilts' book is an important and revealing documentary on the AIDS epidemic and should be read by those who have an interest in the subject.
